Intimate & Expansive

Our Estate

Tucked away among the oaks and pines of California’s Carmel Valley, Stonepine is a 407-acre estate that is full of rustic charm and sophisticated elegance. The estate was built in 1929 by Helen Crocker Russell—heir to the San Francisco banking family of the same name—and her husband, Henry Potter Russell. They named it Double H Ranch, for Helen and Henry.

Double H was purchased in 1983 by Gordon and Noel Hentschel, the latter of whom lends her name to the estate’s centerpiece: Chateau Noel. The Tuscan villa that was designed for the Russells by famed architect Francis Burrall Hoffman in 1929 has served as both a luxury hotel and a private residence, as well as a gathering space for families, site for celebrity weddings, and film-shoot location.

Together, the Chateau and Double H Ranch comprise Stonepine Estate, so named by the Hentschels in honor of the majestic stone pines growing throughout the property.

Double H Ranch is also home to the Stonepine Equestrian Center, a fully operational site where horses have been boarded and cared for for over 90 years. The 40+ horses who currently live on site enjoy a four-furlong race track, as well as multiple jumping and dressage arenas.

Double H Ranch boasts numerous event spaces and accommodations on the grounds, including three separate residences, a game room, a bar, and an events pavilion.

With the Carmel River running through the property, Stonepine is home to an abundance of wildlife and natural beauty.

Miles of trails wind through the trees, while quails, turkeys, and deer wander at will.

From the heights of the 400-tree olive grove near the top of the estate’s natural bowl, you can see mile after mile of velveteen mountains receding into the blue distance.

Blessed with the temperate climate and natural beauty of Carmel Valley, Stonepine’s hundreds of rolling acres offer you a rare combination of classic European architecture and authentic California ranch experience.
